Out of the Water with Sarah Davila
3/22/2007 12:00:00 AM | Water Polo
Sophomore Sarah Davila of the University of Michigan women's water polo team fervently enjoys the ocean waves in California but still wisely chose the cross-country trip to don the Maize and Blue. After sitting out last season, Davila has made the most of her opportunity in 2007, notching five points (three goals, two assists) though nine games, including netting a career-best two markers against Colorado State at the Michigan Kick-Off on Jan. 28.
While Davila admittedly misses her West Coast domicile, she has found a home in Ann Arbor and is part of a sophomore class that is taking the Michigan water polo program to another level.
Davila, who head coach Matt Anderson applauds for her improvement over her time at U-M, took some time recently to talk about her experience at Michigan.
On her decision to come to Michigan
"I was always looking at Division I schools. I wanted to come to a big school, and all of the other schools I was looking at were small. I love the tradition behind Michigan athletics, and Michigan also has strong academics."
On when she started playing water polo
"I was in seventh grade and my brother was a freshman in high school. His girlfriend played water polo, and she said I should come and watch. I was curious, and the minute I saw it I told my mom that I wanted to play this sport. In middle school, I met a girl that played for a club team and she helped me to join, and I've loved it ever since."
On what she has enjoyed about the season
"Hawaii was great, but anytime the team is together we have so much fun. The girls are great and we always have a good time. I like just hanging out with my friends when I am at home -- Julie (Hyrne), Mary (Chatigny), Carrie (Frost)."
On who is hardest to practice against
"It would probably be Julie (Hyrne). Since I know her out of the water, it is weird to bring it into the water. Also, she is just a really awesome player and she will bring it to you."
On what she misses most about home
"My family and my dogs. I miss them so much."
On her plans after graduation
"I really want to work for either Disney or ESPN and do something in advertising. That is what I love."
On her summertime hobbies and interests
"Other than work, I like to go to the beach and surf, especially with my dad. I just bought my new board and I can't wait to use it when I get home."
COACH MATT ANDERSON'S TAKE:
"Sarah had a tough year last year and did a lot of improving going into this season. She has had the opportunity to get into some games and she has performed well. She has one of the stronger shots on the team and has also improved her swimming ability. As a player, she keeps working toward her goals. She went from playing in no games last season to playing in nine games this season and earned the opportunity to go on one of our trips. This weekend, she should get the opportunity to showcase her development."
