BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team began its 2007 spring campaign on Saturday (March 24) by hosting No. 14 Michigan State, No. 11 Notre Dame and Clemson at Belleville Lake. The first varsity eight placed fourth in its race, the second varsity eight was second, and the first varsity four was third in its event.

The first varsity eight race went to the Clemson Tigers in a time of 6:51.36. Less than a length behind the leader was Notre Dame (6:54.44), followed closely by Michigan State (6:57.20), and Michigan (6:58.54).

Michigan State won the second varsity eight race by open water (6:59.33). U-M was second with a time of 7:06.20. The Tigers (7:10.67) and Irish (7:12.46) were third and fourth, respectively.

The first varsity four race was stretched out from first to third place. Notre Dame won in a time of 7:50.76, while MSU took second in 8:00.31 and the Wolverine boat finished last in 8:18.14. Clemson did not race a varsity four.

Michigan State's 'A' boat in the second varsity four won in a time of 8:05.14. Michigan earned second place in 8:19.60, with Notre Dame following in third (8:22.16) and MSU's 'B' crew placing fourth (8:52.79).

The first novice eight race was won by Notre Dame with Michigan taking second place in front of Michigan State. U-M beat Notre Dame in the second novice eight event.

Michigan heads to Charlottesville, Va., next Saturday (March 31) to take part in the ACC/Big Ten Double Dual. The Wolverines will face Virginia and Duke on Lake Monticello.
