First Eight Earns Split at ACC/Big Ten Double Dual

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team received splits from its first and second varsity eights as each boat lost to No. 2 Virginia but defeated Duke on Saturday (March 31) at the ACC/Big Ten Double Dual on Lake Monticello.

The Wolverines' morning set of races pit them against the Virginia Cavaliers. The first varsity eight event went to Virginia by just over half of a boat length -- UVA finished in 6:40.8 and U-M crossed the finish line in 6:43.4.

The Cavaliers won the second varsity eight race by open water in a time of 6:44.0, as the Maize and Blue crew finished in 6:54.1. U-M's first varsity four finished in second place (7:39.5), behind Virginia's 'A' boat (7:30.7) and ahead of the UVA's 'B' entry (7:48.7). The Cavalier novices finished the sweep of U-M with a 7:01.2 to 7:20.8 comparison.

The Wolverine first varsity eight collected its first win of the young season with a 10-second triumph over Duke in the afternoon (6:49.1).

The second varsity eight also earned an open-water win with a time of 7:08.7, which was 6.9 seconds ahead of the Blue Devils. The first varsity four race was won by Virginia's 'C' boat in a time of 7:46.3. Michigan was second in 8:03.2, followed by Duke in 8:20.6. U-M easily won the novice race in 7:20.2. Duke's novices clocked in at 8:00.6.

Michigan travels to Columbus, Ohio, next Saturday (April 7) to take on Ohio State and Tennessee in a double dual format.
