ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Led by one-over-par scores of 72 from seniors Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) and Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary), the University of Michigan women's golf team slightly improved its score and its place in the team standings Friday (May 11) during the second round of the NCAA Central Regional at the par-71, 6,116-yard U-M Golf Course.
Playing in the morning and starting off the 10th tee, the host Wolverines shot 305 as a team -- a six-stroke improvement over their opening round of 311 Thursday afternoon -- and inched up a spot to 15th place in the team standings after beginning the day tied for 16th with Oral Roberts.
Michigan's senior duo of Broderick and Stinson anchored the lineup Friday, with each player breaking par on the front nine and making three birdies and four bogeys overall to finish at 72. Freshman Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) carded a 79, while junior Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) and freshman Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) shot 83 and 84, respectively.
The 107 Central Regional competitors enjoyed a second straight day of good weather -- temperatures in the 70s during the morning and low 80s in the afternoon with light winds -- but scores were slightly higher Friday. Southern Cal shot 288 (+4) as a team and, with a two-day total of 571 (283-288), extended its lead to nine strokes over second-place TCU (289-291/580). Indiana (289-295/584), which was tied for second starting the day, holds third place.
Individually, USC's Paola Moreno tied the women's competitive course record with a bogey-free round of five-under 66, but she still could not catch first-day leader Jacqui Concolino of Vanderbilt, who backed up her opening 67 with a 68 Friday. Concolino (67-68/135) is at seven under par through 36 holes, one shot ahead of Moreno (70-66/136) and five clear of third-place Catherine Matranga of TCU (68-72/140).
With a two-day total of 149 (77-72), U-M's Broderick is in a tie for 27th in the individual standings. She birdied the 16th hole and logged three bogeys on the back nine Friday to make the turn in two-over 37. Broderick got back to even par with kick-in birdies on 3 and 6, hitting her approach shot inside two feet on each hole, but bogeyed the seventh before parring in for her 72 (35-37).
Stinson made six pars and three bogeys on her opening nine holes but played the front nine in two under par to match her season-low round with a 72 (34-38). Stinson played holes 1-6 in two under par -- with birdies on the par-5 first and par-4 sixth -- to get back to one over par for the day. After a bogey on No. 7, Stinson parred the eighth hole and punctuated her round with a birdie on the par-4 ninth.
Bauer, U-M's top individual on the first day with her opening 76, birdied the par-5 11th hole but was five over par after a double bogey on 17, her eighth hole of the day. After five straight pars, she converted a six-foot birdie putt on the par-3 fifth but bogeyed the sixth and doubled the par-3 eighth to finish at 78 (38-40).
The final round of the regional begins Saturday (May 12) with the top 12 teams and the three individual competitors playing in the morning, with tee times from 8:00 to 9:40 a.m. off the first and 10th tees. Michigan will be paired with Northwestern and Missouri and will kick off the afternoon session with tee times from 12:30 to 1:10 p.m. off the first tee.
The top eight schools from the 21-team regional and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 22-25 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
