LAKE ORION, Mich. -- Six University of Michigan men's soccer players took to the pitch Saturday (July 28) when the Michigan Bucks and Chicago Fire Premier faced off in the Premier Development League (PDL) Great Lakes Division Championship. Alex Morisset (Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle), who will be a U-M junior this fall, tallied two assists to lead the Bucks to a 3-0 shutout of their rival.
Other Wolverines on the Bucks roster included juniors Michael Holody (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston), Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and Santos Perez (Troy, Mich./Athens), and sophomore Mauro Fuzetti (Houston, Texas/Stratford). The lone Maize and Blue member of the Fire was junior/sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Sperry (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central).
With the victory the Bucks advanced to the PDL semifinals and will host the Brooklyn Knights at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 4) at Lake Orion High School. The winner will advance to the PDL Championship on Saturday, Aug. 11. The championship will air on Fox Soccer Channel at 11 p.m. EDT.
In the July 27 conference semifinal against the St. Louis Lions, Holody scored the winning goal in the 79th minute of a 4-1 final. He was named a PDL all-conference selection for his consistent defensive play, participating in every minute of all 20 games during the Bucks' regular season.
