2007-08 U-M Women's Basketball Schedule
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball program announced its 2007-08 schedule Thursday (Aug. 23). The challenging 28-game slate features seven NCAA Tournament teams that all won at least 20 games last season.
Michigan's 35th season of varsity competition begins Saturday, Nov. 3, when the Wolverines welcome Lake Superior State to Crisler Arena for a 7 p.m. exhibition contest.
First-year head coach Kevin Borseth will make his official U-M coaching debut one week later (Saturday, Nov. 10) when the Maize and Blue opens the regular season at home against Akron at 7 p.m.
The Wolverines will not return to the confines of Crisler Arena for nearly a month, as U-M takes to the road for a challenging six-game stretch. The trip begins on Tuesday, Nov. 13, against Cincinnati and continues on Monday, Nov. 19, against Miami (Fla.) in the inaugural Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
The Wolverines will then travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament, held Friday, Nov. 23, and Sunday, Nov. 25. Michigan will meet Iowa State on Friday and wrap up the weekend against either Belmont or Vanderbilt on Sunday. The Cyclones, Bruins and Commodores all won at least 25 games and made NCAA appearances last season.
U-M will have a quick turnaround after the two-day tournament, as it travels to College Station, Texas, to face Texas A&M on Thursday, Nov. 29. The Aggies, who will meet the Wolverines for the first time, won 25 games and earned a first-round victory at the NCAA Tournament in 2006-07.
Michigan concludes its lengthy road trip with a match-up against Notre Dame on Sunday, Dec. 2, in South Bend, Ind. The Fighting Irish, who are on U-M's schedule for the third straight year, won 20 games and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Maize and Blue closes out its non-conference slate with three straight home games. The Wolverines will host Kentucky on Saturday, Dec. 8, and Southern Cal on Monday, Dec. 10. U-M's non-conference finale is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 21, against Ohio. All three games are set to begin at 7 p.m.
For the first time since the 1993-94 season, the Big Ten has expanded the conference schedule to 18 games. The slate previously consisted of 16 contests.
The Wolverines will open Big Ten play at Crisler Arena, hosting Iowa on Sunday, Dec. 30. With the expanded schedule, the Maize and Blue will face Ohio State and Minnesota just once during the conference season. U-M will meet the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, Jan. 3, and welcome the Golden Gophers to Ann Arbor for the regular-season finale on Sunday, March 2.
The Wolverines will have the traditional home-and-home series against Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin.
Michigan's home slate is highlighted by contests against Michigan State on Jan. 13, and Purdue on Feb. 21. Both the Spartans and Boilermakers earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, with Purdue advancing to the Elite Eight.
The 2008 Big Ten Tournament will be played at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., March 6-9. The winner of the annual conference tournament earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Additional game times and television distribution for all contests will be released in the coming weeks.
