MADISON, Wis. -- Despite generating five shots on goal, the University of Michigan women's soccer team could not overcome a three-goal first-half outburst from the home squad, falling by a 3-1 tally to Wisconsin on Friday evening (Oct. 17) at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The loss spoiled the homecoming of U-M coaches Greg Ryan and Dean Duerst, who own the second- and first-highest win totals for a Badger head coach, respectively.
Senior Katie Miler(Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored for the second straight game and senior Danelle Underwood(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) assisted on the tally.
Senior Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made one save before being spelled by sophomore/freshman Kristen Keane(Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) at the half. Keane stopped the only shot she faced in the relief appearance.
The Badgers stung the Wolverines with three goals within 10 minutes of each other in the first half. Wisconsin found the back of the net in the 12th, 16th and 21st minute to open up a 3-0 lead. Despite putting four shots on goal in the stanza, the Maize and Blue could not dent the twine in the frame.
Michigan was able to crack Wisconsin goalkeeper Jamie Klagas with its only shot of the second half when Miler scored in the 89th minute to make it a 3-1 contest. Miler took a feed from Underwood and deposited her strike in the back of the cage.
The Wolverines will look to rebound when they take on Northwestern on Sunday (Oct. 19) in Evanston, Ill. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. CDT and will air live on the Big Ten Network.
