
Aarts Advances to Third Round at Big Ten Singles Championship

MADISON, Wis. -- Senior Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team advanced to the third round of the Big Ten Singles Championship today (Saturday, Nov. 1) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Aarts, who moved to 4-3 on the season with his two wins today, defeated Griffin Nienberg from Purdue, 7-6(3), 6-1 in the opening round and took on Santiago Gruter from Indiana in the second round. Aarts, the No. 9 seed, was down a set to Gruter after dropping the first set, 6-4, but he battled back to tie the match with a 6-4 win in the second set and moved into the third round with a 6-4 win in the decisive third set.
In other action, junior Matt Parks (Troy, Mich./Troy HS), junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School) also competed in main draw-action on Saturday. Parks dropped his opening-round match to Northwestern's Eric Spector, 6-3, 6-2, while Navas fell to Indiana's Will Kendall, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, and Daniel dropped a 7-5, 6-3 match to Northwestern's Pete Rispoli.
Aarts will continue action in the main draw on Sunday (Nov. 2) when he takes on Purdue's Slavko Bijelica for a spot in the quarterfinals. Parks, Navas and Daniel will all compete in the consolation bracket continuing on Sunday. Action will begin at 8 a.m. CST.
