May 17, 2008 --Olympic gold medalist and five-time NCAA champion Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) set the American record in the400-meter freestyle at the Toyota International Invitational Grand Prix in Santa Clara, Calif. Feb. 13, 2008 --Olympic gold medalist and five-time NCAA champion Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) set the American record in the 500-yard free Saturday (Feb. 9), on the second night of the Michigan Open at Oakland University. Vanderkaays time of 4:08.54 broke the previous record set by Vanderkaay at the 2006 NCAA Championships by six-hundredths of a second.USA Swimming Coverage
Nov. 30, 2007 --Club Wolverineteam of Michael Phelps (U-M volunteer coach), Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06), Davis Tarwater (2003-06) and Chris DeJong (2003-06) finished with a time of 6:12.43 in the 800-yard freestyle relay Friday (Nov. 30) at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Short Course National Championships, more than five seconds faster than the previous American record set by Stanford at the NCAA Championships in March, and about a second and a half faster than the U.S. Open record set by the University of Arizona at that same meet.USA Swimming Coverage
Aug. 2, 2007 -- Olympic gold medalist and five-time NCAA champion Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) won the 400-meter freestyle (3:45.55) at the 2007 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. He was joined by three Club Wolverine teammates in the finals: Michael Phelps (3rd, 3:47.13), Erik Vendt (5th, 3:47.53) and U-M sophomore Charlie Houchin (7th, 3:53.85); all four clocked Olympic Trials qualifying times. July 31, 2007 -- Two-time U-M NCAA champion Davis Tarwater (2003-06) won the 200-meter butterfly at the 2007 USA Swimming National Championships. Tarwater swam a personal best 1:56.03 to win the gold, marking his second U.S. nationals title after winning the 200 fly at the 2005 Spring Nationals. USA Swimming Coverage
July 21, 2007 -- Matt Patton (400-meter freestyle) and Scott Spann (200 breaststroke) and incoming freshman Tyler Clary (200 backstroke) competed for Team USA at the Pan American Games, held Monday through Sunday, July 16-22, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Patton took the gold medal in the 400 freestyle Wednesday, clocking a pool-record 3:49.77, while Clary earned the silver in the 200 backstroke Thursday and Spann claimed the bronze in the 200 breaststroke Saturday. July 15, 2007 -- Wolverine All-American Andy Potts (1996-99) won the triathlon gold medal at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Leading for most of the race, Potts finished in 1:52.31, seven seconds ahead of Canada's Brent McMahon. With the victory, Potts claimed the USA's second men's Pan Ams gold medal since 1995. May 20, 2007 -- Former Wolverine Andy Potts (1996-99) won the USA Triathlon Elite National Championship with a total time of 1:42:27. The win earned Potts a spot at this summer's Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the ITU World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. The win marked Potts' first national title. April 3, 2007 -- U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps and former Wolverines Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) and Davis Tarwater (2003-06) captured victories to help the the United States defeat Australia in third Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool. Phelps won the 100m freestyle (48.79) and the 200m backstroke (1:56.29) while Vanderkaay took first place in the 200m freestyle (1:47.70) and Tarwater won the 200m butterfly (1:57.12). Future Wolverine Dan Madwed also competed for the United States, clocking 1:59.24 in the 200m butterfly and 54.58 in the 100m butterfly. The event will air on NBC Saturday, April 21, from 2-3 p.m. (EDT), and Sunday, April 22, from 4-6 p.m. (EDT). [ USA Swimming Story ]

March 25 - April 1, 2007 -- Michigan head coach Bob Bowman served as the men's swimming head coach for the United States team at the 2007 FINA World Championships. Team USA's effort was led by U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps. During the week, Phelps shattered four individual world records and contributed to one relay world record. With seven gold medals, Phelps won more golds in one World Championship than anybody had ever done before. He shattered world records in the 200-meter freestyle (1:43.86), 200-meter butterfly (1:52.09), 200-meter individual medley (1:54.98) and 400-meter individual medley (4:06.22). Phelps teamed with two other Club Wolverine members -- former U-M star Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) and Klete Keller -- and Ryan Lochte in winning the gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle relay (7:03.24). Representing Team Canada, former U-M standout Andrew Hurd (2002-05) earned a bronze medal while swimming as the anchor on the Canada's 800-meter freestyle relay team (7:10.70). Hurd also swam in the 400-meter freestyle, finishing 22nd (3:51.52).

March 31, 2007 -- Former Wolverine Andy Potts (1996-99) won the Ford Ironman 70.3 California triathlon. The mileage of the event equaled 70.3 as competitors swam 1.2 miles, biked 56 miles and ran a 13.1 half marathon. Potts recorded a time of 3:59:59. [ Ford Ironman Story ]
March 2007 -- Two former Wolverines will represent the United States at the 2007 FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia (March 25-April 1). U-M men's head coach Bob Bowman will serve as Team USA's head men's coach after serving as an assistant coach on the staff in 2001, '03 and '05. Joining Bowman on Team USA will be U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps (200 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM, 800 free relay), Davis Tarwater (200 fly) and Peter Vanderkaay (400 free, 800 free relay). Bowman will have two additional swimmers from Club Wolverine on his team -- Klete Keller (200 free, 400 free, 400 free relay, 800 free relay) and Erik Vendt (1,500 free) -- and former Wolverine Andrew Hurd (400 free, 800 free relay) will swim for Canada. The University of Michigan has been a mainstay in swimming's international scene since as far back as 1932 when two Wolverines won Olympic gold medals in Los Angeles. Since then countless of student-athletes have represented their native countries in international competition, from Brazil, to The Netherlands, to Canada and the United States. Seventy-eight Wolverine men's swimming and diving athletes and coaches have represented their countries at the Olympics, with 32 student-athletes earning 43 medals, including 16 golds.
