
Simply the Best! Ofili Wins 60-Meter Hurdles NCAA Crown

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Junior co-captain Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) won the national championship in the 60-meter hurdles, running a school-record 7.94 seconds Friday (March 15), as the University of Michigan women's track and field team competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the Randal Tyson Track Center. Ofili's national title added 10 points to the U-M score, helping the Wolverines to top the team rankings (18 points) after day one.
Ofili came in third in her qualifying heat with an 8.07, but rallied in the finals to edge runner-up Kristi Castlin of Virginia Tech by 0.08 seconds. The national title is the second of Ofili's career, following her NCAA crown in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The distance medley relay team composed of freshman Danielle Tauro (Manahawken, N.J./Southern Regional), senior Serita Williams (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee), junior Geena Gall (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) and senior co-captain Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) came in second place with an 11:02.22, taking All-America honors and adding eight points to the Wolverine total.
Gall qualified for Saturday's (March 15) 800-meter final, coming in first place in her heat and second place overall with a 2:07.36.
In the mile run preliminary, Edwards finished first in the second heat with a 4:42.33, qualifying for Saturday's finals.
Junior co-captain Bettie Wade(Northville, Mich./Farmington) came in 16th place in the high jump finals with a clearance of 5-8 3/4.
The Wolverines will compete Sunday (March 15) in the mile run final (6:15 p.m.), the 800-meter final (6:45 p.m) and the pentathlon beginning at 11:30 a.m. CST.
