FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Junior Adam Harris(Wheaton, Ill./North) took fourth place in the 60-meter dash to net the first All-America distinction of his career, headlining the University of Michigan men's track and field team's performance on the final day of competition at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday (March 15) at the Randal Tyson Track Center. With Harris' five points, the Wolverines finished in a six-way tie for 44th place. Arizona State won the team competition with 44 points.
Making his NCAA Championships' finals debut, Harris blazed a 6.62 to claim fourth among the eight-man final in the event. The performance was 0.01 seconds shy from his previous best, which he clocked earlier this season at the Big Ten Championships, and ranks as the fastest 60-meter dash time in U-M program history. Harris is the first Wolverine sprinter to claim All-America honors in the indoor 60-meter dash since Gene Brown finished fifth in 1971.
Harris qualified for the final after registering a time of 6.66 in the first and faster of three preliminary heats. Harris took third in the heat -- just 0.07 seconds out of second place -- and posted the seventh-quickest time of the qualifying round.
In Michigan's other final day action, sophomore Frank Shotwell(Medina, Ohio/Medina HS) completed the final three heptathlon events, finishing the 60-meter hurdles (8.58), the pole vault (14-3 1/4) and the 1,000-meter run (38-0 1/4) to collect 5,055 points and finish 16th among a very talented field.
Junior Lex Williams(Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter HS) competed in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:27.23 to finish 16th in the event. Williams entered the finals the number two-seed with the second fastest time (7:55.59) in the country -- a time he posted at the Meyo Invitational (Feb. 8).
The Wolverines kick off the outdoor portion of its 2008 campaign at the Alabama Relays Decathlon Thursday and Friday (March 27-28) and the Yellow Jacket Invitational Friday and Saturday (March 28-29). The Alabama Decathlon will be held at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala., while the Yellow Jacket Invite will be held at the George C. Griffin Track in Atlanta, Ga.
