CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team won for the eighth time in 10 matches this season, earning a 5-2 victory over No. 48-ranked Harvard Friday afternoon (March 7) in the Murr Tennis Center. The Wolverines (8-2) recorded its sixth doubles sweep and singles wins at Nos. 3-6 to defeat the Crimson for the third straight year.
All three U-M doubles teams picked up 8-5 victories to clinch the first team point. Senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and sophomore George Navas'(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) win over Sasha Ermakov and Ashwin Kumar at the top spot moved the 24th-ranked duo's dual-match record to 8-1. It was just Ermakov and Kumar's sixth loss in 12 matches in 2007-08.
Freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) snapped a four-match losing skid in singles, claiming a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Ermakov at No. 3 to give Michigan a 2-0 lead. Freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) continued his steady play at the sixth position, with his 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Alexei Chijoff-Evans moving the Wolverines within one point of wrapping up the team victory. Madden has won six of seven matches at No. 6 this season.
Harvard stayed alive with a straight-set win at No. 2, but junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) slammed the door on the Crimson with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 decision over Dan Nguyen at No. 4. Mazlin holds a team-best 7-2 record in dual-match play.
Junior Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) capped off the team scoring for U-M, as he battled back to beat Aba Omodele-Lucien by a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 count at No. 5. It was Aarts' team-leading 18th overall singles victory of 2007-08.
The Wolverines close out their four-match road swing Saturday (March 8) against Brown. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, R.I.
