First Varsity Eight Leads Quartet of Winners at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team won four of its six races against No. 9 Tennessee, No. 11 Ohio State and Bucknell on Saturday (April 12) on Griggs Reservoir. The first varsity eight led the way by edging out the Lady Volunteers by 1.5 seconds to capture first place; OSU was just over a single length back of UT in the highly contested race.

Michigan's other winners on the day were the first varsity four and the first and second novice eights.

The first varsity eight race was a battle from start to finish. Tennessee had a narrow advantage over OSU and U-M, but the Wolverines walked through the Buckeyes and eventually surpassed the Lady Volunteers to win the race by a quarter length, 6:47.9 to 6:49.4. OSU clocked in at 6:53.4.

Ohio State's second varsity eight, which is the reigning Big Ten Boat of the Week, kept its record perfect on the season with a win in 6:56.9. The rest of the field was spread out, with Tennessee taking second (7:03.2), followed by Michigan (7:12.2) and Bucknell (7:21.3).

U-M's first varsity four secured an open-water victory with a time of 8:06.2. OSU was the next-closest squad at 8:16.8, while Bucknell and Tennessee finished third and fourth, respectively.

The second varsity four took second in its race (8:21.1), coming up less than a length shy of the winning pace set by OSU (8:18.4). Tennessee and Bucknell were well back in third and fourth, respectively.

The first and second novice eights won their events by open water. Ohio State and Bucknell were second and third, respectively in each of the races.

The Wolverines will travel to Minnesota next Saturday (April 19) to oppose the Golden Gophers and Michigan State on Lake Phalen.
