Michigan Drops Road Match to Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 41-ranked Indiana Saturday afternoon (April 19) on the IU Varsity Tennis Courts. The Wolverines (17-4, 7-2 Big Ten) were unable to bounce back after surrendering the doubles point, as the Hoosiers (15-7, 5-4 Big Ten) went on to earn wins on four of six singles courts to clinch their first victory over U-M since 2004.
Indiana posted wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) prevented Michigan from being swept in doubles for just the second time this season, as the pair claimed an 8-6 triumph over Peter Antons and Michael McCarthy at No. 3. Navas and Madden hold a 4-2 overall record in 2007-08 and have won three straight matches together.
The Hoosiers tallied victories in the first four singles matches completed to clinch the team win. Madden gave the Wolverines their first team point with a 6-3, 7-6(2) decision over McCarthy at No. 6. Madden, who holds a team-best 10-match winning streak, has won 14 of 16 dual matches in his first season. With the win, he became the fifth U-M player, and first freshman, to reach 20 overall victories (20-10).
Freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) completed a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(1) comeback win over Dara McLoughlin at No. 2 for Michigan's second team point. Jung needs just two more victories to reach 20 wins (18-14).
The Wolverines close out the regular season Sunday (April 20) against No. 2-ranked Ohio State. The match is scheduled for a noon start at the Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
