YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Junior Geena Gall(Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) (1,500-meter run), senior Nicole Edwards(Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) (800-meter run), Christina Solomon(Belleville, Mich./Belleville) (high jump) and junior co-captain Tiffany Ofili(Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) (100-meter dash, long jump) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team earned first-place finishes in their respective events at the Central Collegiates Saturday (April 19).
The Wolverines dominated the middle distances. Edwards finished first in the 800-meter run, earning an NCAA mark, and freshman Danielle Tauro(Manahawken, N.J./Southern Regional) took another NCAA regional qualifying time, coming in fifth place with a 2:09.34. Junior/sophomore Kelly Sampson(Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) came in sixth place with a 2:11.80.
Gall's NCAA regional qualifying 1,500-meter time of 4:22.37 placed her in the top spot, while fifth-year senior Toni Salucci(Wading River, N.Y.,/Wading River-Shoreham) and sophomore/freshman Jennifer Morgan(Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in the event.
Christina Solomon earned another NCAA qualifying jump of 5-8 3/4 for first place. Junior/sophomore Olivia Both(Columbus , Ohio/Upper Arlington) came in second place with a jump of 5-7.
Ofili, finishing first in the 100-meter dash (12.00), was joined by junior Casey Taylor's (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) eighth-place finish (12.62). Ofili and Casey went 1-2 in the long jump, with Ofili earning the NCAA mark of 20-2 1/2.
Senior Serita Williams(Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) earned a second-place NCAA qualifying time of 54.00 in the 400-meter dash. Junior/sophomore Shana Vinson(Detroit, Mich./Mumford) came in third place with a 54.65, just missing an NCAA mark.
Junior Amber Hay(Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) collected her third NCAA qualifying mark of the season in the 400-meter hurdles with a second-place 59.98.
Fifth-year senior co-captain Bridgette Maynard(Clawson, Mich/Bishop-Foley) and freshman Emily Pendleton(Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) placed first and second, respectively, in the discus.
The Wolverines will compete in three different meets Thursday through Saturday (April 24-26) at the Drake, Penn and Hillsdale Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, Philadelphia, Pa., and Hillsdale, Mich., respectively.
