TULSA, Okla. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team saw its remarkable 2008 season come to a close Friday afternoon (May 16) with a 4-0 setback to No. 1-ranked Virginia in the third round of the NCAA Championship at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Wolverines were unable to duplicate the doubles success they had against the Cavaliers (31-0) earlier this season, and Virginia went on to claim three singles matches in straight sets to clinch its fifth straight victory over the Maize and Blue. U-M, which was making its first appearance in the NCAA Sweet16 in 20 years, finishes the season at 20-7.
The Cavaliers struck first on the No. 3 doubles court, where Houston Barrick and Sanam Singh posted an 8-3 win over sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS). Barrick and Singh earned an early break to go up 2-0, and the duo broke Navas and Madden's serve again in the ninth game to go ahead 6-3. Barrick and Singh held serve and then recorded one final break to wrap up the victory.
After giving up a break in the third game of its No. 2 doubles match against Dominic Inglot and Michael Shabaz, Michigan's No. 38-ranked tandem of sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) responded with a break of its own to tie the score at 4-4. The Wolverine pair was unable to ride that momentum for the remainder of the match, however, as Inglot and Shabaz reeled off four straight games to secure an 8-4 triumph and the first team point for Virginia.
Senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimanzija) and junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs Fla./Lyman HS) were down a break at 6-5 to the Cavaliers' No. 1-ranked team of Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey at No. 1 when the doubles point was clinched. Maravic and Mazlin bounced back from a 3-1 deficit by earning back-to-back breaks in the sixth and eight games, but Devvarman and Huey pulled ahead once again with a break just before the match was abandoned.
Inglot, who is ranked 17th nationally in singles, provided Virginia with a 2-0 lead thanks to a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Mazlin at No. 3. It was just Mazlin's sixth defeat in 26 dual matches. Moments later, Madden fell to Shabaz by a 6-3, 6-0 score at No. 5 to bring Virginia within one win of advancing to the quarterfinals. Madden finishes his first dual-match campaign with a 16-6 record.
Jung put forth a solid effort at No. 2, but No. 28-ranked Huey used a late surge to complete a 6-4, 6-2 win and seal the team victory for Virginia. Sroczynski got off to a great start at No. 4, as he led Singh 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 when the team outcome was decided.
Maravic and Navas will remain in Tulsa in hopes of securing a spot in the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship field, which will be held Thursday through Monday, May 22-26. Maravic and Navas are currently listed second on the alternate list.
