TUCSON, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team came up just short, falling 1-0 in overtime to Arizona on Friday evening (Sept. 19) in Murphey Stadium. Senior Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made two saves in the game.
Michigan threatened often on set plays, coming within an inch of scoring in the 53rd minute when sophomore Jackie Carron(Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) rattled off a free kick that was labeled for the back of the net, but as the ball soared toward the net, it caught the bottom of the crossbar and bounced away.
The two squads battled fiercely through regulation without a single goal going up on the board. However, Arizona broke the stalemate in extra time, scoring the winning goal at 95:22. Karina Camacho got a pass into the box and headed it home to end the contest and defeat Michigan by the same score the Wolveines clipped Arizona by in a 2006 meeting in Ann Arbor when U-M defeated the Wildcats in overtime, 1-0.
The Wolverines will take on Arizona State on Sunday (Sept. 21) in Tempe, Ariz. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MST.

Q U O T E S
On the game... "The girls played the best game as a team this year. Arizona is a very good team, probably the best we have played next to Notre Dame. It came down to whoever gets that last chance -- and they got it. I am really proud how they played. It was the most organized we have played and we created enough chances to win."
On the difference between the two teams... "Arizona had more of the ball, but only had one chance in the box to score and that's the one that won it. We got a great goalkeeping effort from Madison (Gates), great defending and had our chances but didn't put them away. It is a good sign that we can play a team this good and have a chance to win. It is a big step for us. It is very encouraging and I am not disappointed in the loss. We are improving faster than I expected and these teams will prove a good challenge before the Big Ten (games)."
