ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team was unable to overcome a quick start and a strong inside game by Indiana, falling 60-50 to the Hoosiers on Thursday night (Jan. 22) at Crisler Arena. Senior guard Jessica Minnfield(Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) led the Wolverines with 14 points and senior forward Carly Benson(Carney, Mich./Carney-Nadeau Public School) added 11 for U-M.
Indiana, who outscored the Maize and Blue 36-14 in the paint in the contest, jumped out to a quick 17-6 start in the first five and a half minutes, forcing a U-M timeout. The Hoosiers started the contest shooting 72.7 percent from the field (8-of-11).
A triple by Benson and a basket by junior guard Kalyn McPherson(Traverse City, Mich./West) trimmed the Indiana lead back to six, 17-11, but the Hoosiers responded by going on an 8-2 run to push their lead back to double digits, and Indiana took a 36-19 lead into the intermission. Amber Jackson of the Hoosiers led all scorers with 11 points at the break, while Michigan was led by Benson's six.
Minnfield scored nine after the intermission and freshman forward Carmen Reynolds(Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) came off the bench to provide a spark, scoring seven points in the second stanza, but the Maize and Blue was unable to cut the Indiana advantage to less than the final margin of 10 points in the second half.
Jackson led all scorers with 18 points for the Hoosiers, who also got 16 from Jamie Braun.
Michigan will be back in action on Monday (Jan. 26) at 7 p.m. CST when it travels to Iowa City, Iowa, to face the Hawkeyes. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. Fans can also follow the action live with Matt Park and Nick Brandon on WTKA AM 1050.
