COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Olivia Olson converted a layup with just under three seconds remaining to cap a 10-0 overtime run and lift the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team to an 88-86 win over No. 13 Ohio State on Wednesday evening (Feb. 25) at Value City Arena.
Michigan trailed by eight, 86-78, with 1:36 left in overtime. Macy Brown sparked the rally with an 8-0 run of her own, pulling the Wolverines even with a pair of free throws and back-to-back three-pointers, the second coming with 15 seconds left. Ohio State missed on the ensuing possession, and Syla Swords secured the rebound and called timeout to advance the ball. Olson took the inbound pass on the sideline and used a screen from Alyssa Crockett at the top of the key to create separation, finishing a hanging layup for the two-point lead. OSU's desperation heave went in but was not released in time, sealing the Michigan win.
Olson poured in a career-high 31 points to go with nine rebounds in 40 minutes. Swords added 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Brown scored all eight of her points in the overtime session. Te'Yala Delfosse chipped in nine points and seven rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench. Michigan controlled the glass, 46-33, and turned 24 offensive rebounds into second-chance points.
Michigan grabbed a three-point lead with 14 seconds left in regulation on a Swords triple. The Wolverines forced an errant OSU shot on the other end but fouled on the rebound, sending the Buckeyes to the line, where they missed both free throws. U-M then turned the ball over on the inbound and fouled Jaloni Cambridge on a three-point attempt. Cambridge converted all three free throws to send the game to overtime.
U-M trailed by as many as 14 in the first quarter before tying the game at 32 by opening the second quarter on an 18-4 run.
Michigan took a 39-37 lead on a Swords three-pointer on its final possession of the half, but Ohio State answered to take a 40-39 edge into the break. U-M scored 25 points in the second quarter on 61.1 percent shooting to climb back into the contest.
The Wolverines opened the third quarter on a 9-3 run and eventually built a 61-53 lead after 30 minutes, with Delfosse scoring on the final possession of the period.
Michigan extended its advantage to 67-58 on another Swords triple with 7:42 remaining, but OSU responded with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to two. Swords halted the run with a jumper in the lane at the 3:44 mark before Ohio State moved ahead, 71-69, with 1:21 to play.
Olson made a pair of free throws on Michigan's next possession with just under a minute remaining to tie the game and set up the overtime period.
Michigan closes out the regular season at home on Saturday (Feb. 28), hosting Maryland at 2:30 p.m. U-M will honor its senior class of Crockett, Brooke Quarles Daniels and Ally VanTimmeren as part of Senior Day prior to the contest at approximately 2:15 p.m. Katelynn Flaherty's No. 3 jersey will be honored at halftime.
