ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team handed out its 2009 season awards and recognized the efforts of its three-member senior class on Saturday (Dec. 12) at the annual postseason banquet held in the Michigan Union. The evening also celebrated the team's second season under head coach Greg Ryan.
For the third consecutive campaign, junior defender Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) took home team MVP honors. Carron, an All-Big Ten second team selection, tallied a team-leading six assists and 10 points. In addition to her on the field success, Carron was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 second team and garnered Academic All-Big Ten honors. Carron joins Debbie Flaherty (1994-97) as the only two Wolverines named team MVP at least three times.
Senior Alex Jendrusch (Troy, Mich./Athens) and junior/sophomore Kristen Keane (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) were both recognized for their team-oriented attitudes, sharing the Maize and Blue award. Keane earned the opening day nod for the Wolverines in net and went on to post a 2-3-0 record in five starts. The veteran netminder combined with sophomore/freshman Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) to give U-M a conference-leading 105 team saves.
Jendrusch had her name called twice more on the evening, receiving the Lloyd Carr award, given to a player who represents the Michigan ideals, and the Most Improved Player award. The senior tri-captain forced her way into the starting lineup and stayed for good for the final 10 games of the season. Appearing in all 20 games, she led the team with four goals and was tied for second on the team with eight points. Jendrusch was also tabbed as U-M's Big Ten Sportsmanship award honoree and collected Academic All-Big Ten standing.
The banquet also paid tribute to the careers of seniors Jendrusch, Amy Klippert (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Kylie Neschke (Still River, Mass./Tabor Academy). Neschke has declared her intentions to return for a fifth season following an injury-shortened 2009 campaign.
