Notes & Quotes
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan water polo team downed host Harvard, 13-2, in the opening game of the Harvard Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 14) at Blodgett Pool.
Sophomore Lauren Orth(Poway, Calif./Poway) exploded for six points, registering her seventh career hat trick to go with three assists. Sophomore Sarah Roberts(Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) and senior Carrie Frost(Saline, Mich./Saline) added two goals apiece.
Freshman Morgan Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) backstopped the win, making nine stops on 11 shots and chipping in an assist in her first career start. She was aided by a strong defensive presence, headed by senior Kelsey Haley's (Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo) three steals and the play of junior Terri Bukofzer(Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) and sophomore Ryley Plunkett(Modesto, Calif./Johansen).
Michigan stormed out of the gates, getting goals off the counter attack from senior Julie Hyrne(Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and sophomore Alison Mantel(Miami, Fla./Gulliver) just over three minutes into the game. Frost got her first of the contest and, after a Crimson goal, Orth struck for hers with the 6-on-5 advantage at 7:31 of the first period.
The defense on both sides buckled down for the first five minutes of period two before sophomore Keller Felt (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) made it a 4-1 contest with 3:02 remaining. Roberts converted two minutes later, generating the opportunity from two meters. Senior Mary Chatigny (Palm Springs, Calif./Palm Springs) ended the half's scoring, catching a breakout pass from Hyrne and translated it into a 7-1 lead.
Orth shined in the third period, accounting for both Michigan scores. With 4:40 left in the stanza, Felt drew a penalty shot that Orth converted. The Crimson responded at 3:05 before another Orth marker gave U-M a 9-2 lead with eight minutes left in the contest.
Frost led off the fourth period on a goal from two meters -- in stark contrast to Bukofzer's long blast from eight meters that found the back of the net three minutes later. Michigan got another 6-on-5 goal when senior Sarah Davila(Yorba Linda, Calif./El Dorado) connected with Roberts for the marker. Freshman Roxanne Mansfield(San Mateo, Calif./St. Francis) got her first career goal in just under the wire, scoring with 12 seconds left to give U-M the 13-2 victory.
Michigan will take to the water with Siena at 12:30 p.m. and Brown at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 15) for the final two games of the Harvard Invitational in U-M's second-ever trip to Cambridge, Mass.

Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On the game... "I thought it went well. There were a few technical things we wanted to stress working on in this game. Though we did not do it to perfection, we improved on where it had been. The execution was better. We got a chance to look at some different rotations and give some players extended minutes against Harvard team that made us work on defense. Fortunately, we were aware on defense and that enabled us to control things on offense."
On who stepped up in the absence of some of the starters... "I thought that Morgan Turner did a very nice job in first career start. Keller Felt really showcased her abilities on the counter attack and Lauren Orth did a nice job orchestrating offense. Ryley Plunkett got a lot of time at two meters and that's what Harvard likes to do, so she got a chance to show what she can do. It was a good opportunity for the players chomping at the bit to get some playing time. I was very happy with how they stepped in for Leah (Robertson), Sharayah (Hernandez) and Cara (Reitz) and really kept the level pretty high."
