U-M Well Represented at USA Swimming National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming team was well represented at the 2009 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships & World Championship Trials, held July 7-11. Both current and former Wolverines swam in the event, with two current and two former U-M swimmers qualifying for the World Championships in Rome, which take place July 19-Aug. 2. Event winners automatically qualified for the national team, while remaining roster spots were determined at the conclusion of the meet.
Current U-M swimmers Tyler Clary(Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) and Dan Madwed(Stamford, Conn./Towson) both secured at-large roster spots for the World Championships, while former swimmers Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) and Davis Tarwater (2003-06) also punched a ticket to Rome. Former volunteer assistant coach and Club Wolverine swimmer Michael Phelps will also represent the United States at the World Championships.
Meanwhile, former head coach Bob Bowman (2004-08) will head the U.S. squad, while current U-M head coach Mike Bottom and coach emeritus Jon Urbanchek will serve on the coaching staff at the World Championships.
Clary will swim the 400-meter individual medley after finishing second with a time of 4:06.96. The junior will also compete in the 200-meter butterfly at the World Championships, as he finished runner-up with a time of 1:53.64. Madwed will compete in the 400-meter freestyle after finishing second (3:47.24) to Vanderkaay's first-place showing (3:45.17) in the event. In addition to the 400-meter freestyle, Vanderkaay will be part of the 800-meter freestyle relay team with Tarwater.
Phelps will swim the 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly, as well as the 200-meter freestyle. Phelps set a new world record in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 50.22 while just outlasting Clary in the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.76.
