GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Playing in front of a crowd of over 2,000 at Pat Patterson Field in Kentwood, Mich., the University of Michigan men's soccer team tied Marquette, 0-0, in its season-opening exhibition game on Thursday (Aug. 20). The goalkeeping duo of junior/sophomore Chris Blais(Seattle, Wash./Kennedy Memorial) and sophomore/freshman Tim Bergsma(Beverley Hills, Mich./Southfield Christian) combined for four saves on the night.
The Wolverines and Golden Eagles practiced penalty kicks at the end of regulation using a shootout format, which did not count toward the final score. The teams went through the first four shooters and were tied 2-2, but Marquette took a 3-2 decision in the shootout on an Andy Huftalin conversion.
Senior/junior midfielder Cam Cameron(Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) had a chance late in regulation to give U-M the victory. After collecting the ball in the middle of the field, he fired a shot to the far left post, which just barely grazed the post and rolled out of bounds.
Michigan had several quality opportunities early in the game, outshooting Marquette, 3-1, in the opening minutes of the contest before both teams settled into a rhythm. Senior forward Mauro Fuzetti(Houston, Texas/Stratford) and freshman Hamoody Saad(Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn) had two quality opportunities but were stifled by Marquette's Matt Pyzdrowski.
Marquette's Andrew Krynski , Calum Mallace and Anthony Colaizzi led the Golden Eagle offense with two shot each, while U-M's attack was led by senior Julian Robles(Los Angeles, Calif./Damien),Fuzetti and Saad, who also recorded two shots each.
Statistically speaking, the game was evenly matched as U-M held an 11-9 advantage on shots and a slim 5-4 margin on corner kicks.
U-M has two more friendlies on tap this exhibition slate beginning with a contest at West Virginia on Sunday (Aug. 23) at 1 p.m. in Morgantown, W.Va. The Wolverines will then conclude the exhibition season on Wednesday, Aug. 26, against Xavier. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Complex.
