Aug. 21, 2009 -- USA Water Polo announced that one current and two future Wolverines earned All-America honors at the 2009 Women's 20 and Under National Championship.Incoming2-meterdefender Lauren Colton was selected to the second team whilesophomore netminder Tara Brighamand incoming driver Kiki Golden each earned honorable mention status.[USA Water Polo]
July 30-Aug. 2, 2009 -- Two future Wolverines squared off in the championship game of the 2009 S&R Sport USA Water Polo Girl's Junior Olympics in Palo Alto, Calif. Incoming 2-meter defender Lauren Colton earned co-MVP honors in the U-18 division, scoring once, drawing three exclusions and a five-meter penalty to help SET claim the gold medal. Going opposite Colton in the championship contest was Diablo driver Kiki Golden who will join the Maize and Blue for the 2010 campaign. SET claimed the gold medal with a 7-5 win. [USA Water Polo]
July 19-Aug. 1, 2009 -- Former Wolverine netminder Betsey Armstrong completed a gold medal run at the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy with a 7-6 victory over Canada. She made 67 saves on 119 shots in seven games between the pipes. Armstrong has now stood atop the podium at the world championship twice, returning to the pinnacle after a 2007 title. July 21-23, 2009 -- A crowd of current and future Michigan players participated in the 2009 Women's 20 and Under National Championships in Stockton, Calif. Incoming freshman Lauren Colton (SET) placed fourth followed by newcomer Kiki Golden (Diablo) who slotted in eighth place. Rounding out the Maize and Blue contingent was incoming freshman Natalie Naruns (Stanford White) who finished 13th and sophomore goalkeeper Tara Brigham (Houston) who came in 16th place. Junior 2-meter defender Ryley Plunkett (Modesto Stanislaus) also participated but did not place. [USA Water Polo]
July 17, 2009-- Former U-M All-American Shana Welch was named the assistant coach of the Harvard men's and women's water polo teams. Welch followed up her stellar career at Michigan with one-year stints as a strength and conditioning intern at her alma matter and as an assistant coach with the Bucknell swimming program. [CWPA]
June 9-14, 2009 -- Former Wolverine Betsey Armstrong guided the United States to a gold medal in the 2009 FINA Women's World League Super Final in Kirishi, Russia. Armstrong made 55 saves in five games including nine in the finals against Canada. [USA Water Polo]
June 12-13, 2009 -- Senior Casie Kelly went back to her high school pool to participate in the Sunshine State Games. Kelly helped guide Patriot Aquatics to a silver medal finish in the women's open division. [Flasports.com]
