LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team lost in heartbreaking fashion to No. 7 Syracuse, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday (Sept. 19) at Louisville's Trager Stadium.

Vanessa Sekhon
The Orange opened the scoring in the first half, but the Wolverines responded 10 minutes later on junior Vanessa Sekhon's (West Vancouver, B.C./Collingwood) first goal of the season. Despite U-M outshooting the Orange, 5-3, in the frame, a scoreless second half sent the game into overtime with Syracuse notching the gamewinner in the final seconds of the extra session, scored by Amy Kee off a penalty-corner play at 84:43.
Sekhon's marker came late in the 26th minute in response to the Orange's first strike at the 15-minute mark. Junior Alicia Mayer (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) hit Sekhon with a pass from the right side of the cage for the goal. Fifth-year senior Paige Pickett (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas) made four stops in the first half to preserve the stalemate and finished with six saves on the day.
U-M will remain in Louisville to oppose the No. 16-ranked Louisville Cardinals tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 20) at 1 p.m.
