BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Soony Saad (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn ) scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season on a free kick to cut the Indiana lead to one goal in the second half, but the University of Michigan men's soccer team could not get the equalizer and fell at Indiana, 2-1, on Saturday (Oct. 16) at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Saad led the Michigan offense with a goal and a game-best seven shots, two of which reached the frame. Chris Blais (Seattle, Wash./Kennedy Memorial) made four saves in the loss.
Trailing 2-1 late in the game, the Wolverines made a push as Justin Meram (Shelby Township, Mich./Eisenhower) and Matt Schmitt (Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) connected for a scoring chance. Schmitt collected the ball on the left side of the field and went down the sideline and pushed it to Meram, who was streaking, but the pass was just off Meram's foot and went out of bounds.
With Michigan attempting to tie, Blais made a point-blank save late to prevent the Hoosiers from taking a 3-1 lead, while Brian Klemczak (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) and Kofi Opare (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul) bottled up Indiana's Will Bruin, who has 10 goals on the year, containing him to just one shot on goal in the contest.
The Wolverines had two opportunities on corner kicks early in the first half and, despite several good services from Hamoody Saad (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn), could not break into the scoring column. Later, Ezekiel Harris (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth) made a run from the backline and received the ball at his feet just inside the Indiana 18-yard line, but his strike went just over the net. Classmate Soony Saad also had a nice chance in the first half. After getting the ball in the midfield from Adam Shaw (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch), he took several touches and pushed the ball to his left foot and ripped a powerful shot from the right side of the box that went just over the top of the goal.
Michigan continues its two-game road swing on Tuesday (Oct. 19) when it travels to Akron, Ohio, to take on the top-ranked Akron Zips. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "We created enough chances tonight to beat Indiana, but our finishing was uncharacteristically off. The difference in the game was a 20-minute period in the first half where we didn't step our aggression up when they did. This lesson is an extremely important one for us to learn from as we square off against our remaining Big Ten opponents."
