ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team opened the 2010-11 campaign with a decisive sweep of Oakland (185-105) and Notre Dame (172-120) in double-dual action on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 23) inside the OU Aquatic Center.
The Wolverines claimed both relays and put nine different swimmers at the top of the podium. Sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) led the field in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles and swam the last leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Kasey Allen (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) turned in a pair of runner-up performances on the springboard, including a 321.00 off the three-meter.
Three of Michigan's rookie swimmers posted wins in their collegiate debut. Freshman Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) touched the wall more than a second-and-a-half ahead of the field in the 200-yard individual medley, accounting for U-M's largest margin of victory on the day. Freshman Sean Ryan (Hixson, Texas/McCallie School) held off sophomore Ryan Feeley (Rye, N.Y./Rye) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, with both Wolverines finishing more than five seconds ahead of the field. Freshman John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy Prep) was the final Wolverine newcomer to earn a victory, clinching his first 100-yard butterfly crown.
Meanwhile, junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) posted a win in the 200-yard backstroke and was on both winning relay squads, with his 200-yard medley relay mate, senior James Ridgeway (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), also collecting a win of his own in the 100-yard breaststroke.
After a week off, the Wolverines will venture to Bloomington, Ind., to face Indiana and Texas in non-conference action on Friday, Nov. 5.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Mike Bottom
On the win ... "It was great having Chris Douville lead the team starting out in the 1,000 (freestyle). He was extraordinary and we needed that from our captain since we are missing Neal Kennedy, our other captain. Unfortunately, his (Kennedy's) injury kept him out, but Chris stepped it up and filled in the shoes. Our senior captain last year, Chris Brady, left a big void in our sprint crew and Miguel Ortiz filled that quickly. James Ridgeway, another senior leader, also had a nice day with his win in the 100 breaststroke."
On the performance of the freshmen ... "We challenged out freshmen at the beginning of the meet with the understanding that this team couldn't move forward without them stepping right into the fray. They responded by stepping it up, winning events and leading this team victory. (Assistant coach) Dr. Josh White believes it is crucial to get them confidence early and I would agree with that."
Michigan Head Diving Coach KZ Li
On the team's first meet ... "They have been doing whatever they can in practice to get ready, but this was the first chance to test them. I need to get to know them. Some of the people did really well compared to what they have been doing in practice and some did not. That is good to see them early and get them experience. In the future we have to fine tune and make some corrections. Notre Dame is a good team and it was good for them to see what another good team looks like and see how they stand up."
