ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior left wing Scooter Vaughan (Placentia, Calif.) scored two goals to lead 12 Wolverines with points in a 6-1 victory for the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 3 USA Today/No. 4 USCHO) over Nebraska-Omaha (No. 10 USA Today/No. 10 USCHO) on Saturday (Oct. 23) at Yost Ice Arena. Senior goalie Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) made 35 saves, equaling the second-best total of his career.
Junior left wing David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) lit the lamp just eight seconds into the game -- the fastest goal in the modern U-M ice hockey era and fastest in the NCAA since Oct. 25, 2008. The puck deflected off a Maverick defender after senior center forward Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) shot the puck into the UNO zone. Wohlberg scooped up the loose puck from the outer edge of the left circle and rifled a shot into the top shelf glove-side for the game's first tally.
The second period saw another first-minute goal for the Wolverines when senior co-captain Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) slipped one past the UNO goaltender on a second-chance effort at 0:55. Senior alternate captain Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) dug the puck out from the boards and fed Hagelin between the faceoff circles. The first shot came straight back to him off of a defender, but his rebound attempt found its way through the crowd, by the left pad of the goaltender, and into the back of the net.
Vaughan then struck twice -- at 3:40 and 10:00 -- setting two personal bests -- two goals in one game and most goals in a season with four. His first tally was a wicked wrist shot that beat the goalie over the stick-side shoulder off a feed from freshman right wing Derek DeBlois (Narragansett, R.I.), while his second marker eluded the goalkeeper thanks to traffic in front of the net to put U-M up, 4-0. DeBlois and junior defenseman Greg Pateryn (Sterling Heights, Mich.) drew the assists.
Nebraska-Omaha's Matt Hudson broke up the shutout at 15:35 of the second stanza on a rebound from the left side.
Freshman defenseman Kevin Clare (New Rochelle, N.Y.) notched the first point of his career with an assist midway through the final frame, when he fired a shot from the point that junior right wing Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) redirected out of mid-air into the net. Three minutes later, the patience of senior forward Ben Winnett (New Westminster, B.C.) paid off as a stall move allowed him to creep in front of the net for another U-M goal and a 6-1 lead. Two defensemen, freshman Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) and junior Brandon Burlon (Nobleton, Ontario), facilitated the setup for Winnett.
Next week, the Wolverines return to CCHA play against Ferris State in a home-and-home series. Friday night's contest will be held at 7:05 p.m. in Big Rapids, Mich., while Saturday's matchup will begin at 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
