MADISON, Wis. -- Less than 48 hours after celebrating a last-minute victory, the University of Michigan women's soccer team found itself on the losing end of double-overtime final, falling at Wisconsin, 1-0, on Sunday (Oct. 24) at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The Badgers broke the scoreless tie in the 109th minute of play.
Junior/sophomore Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made five saves in the effort as the Wolverines' five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) came to an end.
Michigan controlled the play in the first half but could only generate a chance by senior Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) that was handled by the Wisconsin goalkeeper. As the game wore on, the physicality of play picked up with 36 fouls and five yellow cards being doled out. The Badgers broke through in the 109th minute, after a Wisconsin attacker followed a rebound off a Kopmeyer save and chipped in the deciding goal.
The Wolverines, who have won three of their last four games, will host Iowa on Friday night (Oct. 29) at 7 p.m. inside the U-M Soccer Stadium. BigTenNetwork.com will be streaming the game live via webcast.
