ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 4 USA Today/No. 11 USCHO) defeated Western Ontario, 4-2, in an exhibition match on Sunday (Oct. 3) at Yost Ice Arena.
Michigan's first line -- junior left wing David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.), senior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario), and junior right wing Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) -- each recorded a multi-point game en route to the U-M victory. The three combined for three goals and five assists, which amounted to half the team's point total.
The Wolverines opened their scoring drive at 10:49 of the first period when sophomore center A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) employed a series of dekes to elude a defender and eventually slide the puck underneath the Western Ontario netminder with a backhander. Sophomore wing Lindsay Sparks (Oakville, Ontario) flicked the puck out of the zone to freshman wing Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.), who battled along the left-hand boards before moving the disc forward and setting Treais up for the lamplighter.
With three minutes remaining in the opening period, alternate captain Caporusso worked the puck into the high slot for sophomore defender Lee Moffie (Wallingford, Conn.), whose shot was deflected just enough by Glendening to fool the goaltender and find the back of the net to up the ante to 2-0.
Glendening struck again at the onset of the second stanza at 5:02. Wohlberg started the charge down the ice, dished the puck off to Caporusso, who unselfishly passed it to Glendening standing in front of a wide open net for the tic-tac-toe tally.
Western Ontario scored at 14:07 when Chris Rucca threw a puck on net that deflected off a Michigan defender and beat senior goalie Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) between the legs.
However, Wohlberg responded merely 2:25 later with a laser into the upper left corner to regain the three-goal cushion.
The final frame began poorly for the Maize and Blue. A rocket from Mustangs forward Keaton Turkiewicz just 20 seconds in made it a two-goal contest. Later, with 11 minutes to play, a bouncing puck nearly found its way across the Michigan goal line, until Treais swept in behind Hogan to keep the status quo. Additionally, Michigan was forced to kill off two separate five-on-three man-advantages, including one lasting 1:16 in the final two minutes of the game.
Michigan will resume regular-season play next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 8-9) at Bowling Green. Both games are slated to start at 7:05 p.m. at BGSU Ice Arena. Friday's game will be televised by Comcast on channel 900.
