PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Senior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team made a run to the semifinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships before falling to No. 2-ranked Hilary Barte of Stanford (6-1, 6-3) on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 9) at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Muresan scored a three-set win over No. 23 Noelle Hickey (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the first round of the tournament on Thursday (Oct. 7) before winning her next two matches in straight sets. In the round of 16 on Friday (Oct. 8), the 2010 Big Ten Player of the Year knocked off No. 9 Venise Chan of Washington (6-3, 6-0) to move on to the quarterfinals. Facing No. 25 Reka Zilinska of Duke, Muresan came away with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
The senior duo of Whitney Taney (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Rika Tatsuno (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula), the No. 4 seed in the doubles main draw, received a first-round bye before dropping a pair of matches on Friday, falling, 9-8 (5), to the No. 15-ranked duo of Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie of Mississippi and, 8-3, to Akron's Zara Harutyunyan and Angelina Jogasuria.
Taney participated in the singles qualifying draw, splitting a pair on the first day of competition (Tuesday, Oct. 6). The senior captain dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match to SMU's Marta Lesniak, the No. 24-ranked player in the country, before rebounding to knock off Kentucky's Megan Broderick, 6-2, 6-2. Taney's consolation matches were rained out and not completed.
Next up for the Wolverines will be hosting the USTA/ITA Midwest Championships, set for Oct. 21-26 at the Varsity Tennis Center.
