ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite committing zero penalties in a game for the first time in more than two seasons, the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 9 USA Today/No. 8 USCHO) yielded a pair of third-period markers and fell to Notre Dame (No. 11 USA Today/No. 11 USCHO), 3-1, on Friday (Nov. 12) at Yost Ice Arena. Senior co-captain Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) had Michigan's lone tally on a breakaway attempt in the opening period, while senior goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) had 30 saves.
The Fighting Irish got on the board early at 3:01 of the first frame after Michigan had trouble clearing the zone. The puck came around to Jared Beers, who took a shot from the point that hit a Notre Dame player out in front and was scooped up by Nick Larson for the put-back and the game's opening mark.
However, the Wolverines retaliated nine seconds later on the team's first shot. Sophomore defenseman Lee Moffie (Wallingford, Conn.) received the puck off a U-M faceoff win and passed across to junior defenseman Brandon Burlon (Nobleton, Ontario), who fed Hagelin splitting the Notre Dame defense at the far blue line. All alone on the breakaway, Hagelin buried the puck on the stick side of goalie Mike Johnson to knot the game at 1-1.
The second stanza saw back-and-forth chances, including a scoring opportunity for senior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario), who, streaking down the left-hand boards, wristed a shot that nicked the post and deflected wide. While Notre Dame took the lead on the shot chart, the score remained deadlocked after 40 minutes.
At the 1:35 mark of the final frame, Billy Maday rifled a shot from the right-hand boards that banked off the nearside post and across the ice, finding its way to Kevin Lind, who squeaked the puck into the bottom left corner to break the tie and lift the Irish to a one-goal lead.
Sophomore right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) had a wraparound chance at 10:36 after picking up the rebound on a shot from sophomore center A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) but was denied at the last instant.
A two-on-one rush from the Fighting Irish found Calle Ridderwall ahead of his defender in the high slot. Ridderwall made a slight deke around Hunwick to pad Notre Dame's lead to 3-1 at 10:48.
The Maize and Blue takes on the Fighting Irish again tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 13) at Yost Ice Arena as it looks to even the weekend series.
