CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand -- Former University of Michigan water polo goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong (2002-05) will lead the US Women's Senior National Team at the FINA World Cup, which runs Tuesday through Sunday (Aug. 17-22) at the QEII Park Recreation and Sport Centre.
Armstrong has been the United States' top goalkeeper for the past three years. During her tenure in the cage, Armstrong has led her country to gold medals at the FINA World Championship in 2007 and 2009 and a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.
Before representing her country on the global stage, Armstrong put together a CWPA Hall of Fame career in the Wolverine net. She earned national praise each season in Ann Arbor, garnering All-America recognition four times and was a finalist for the Cutino Award as the nation's top player during the 2004 season. She was named divisional Most Valuable Player twice (2003-04) and earned four CWPA all-division first team honors (2002-05).
Team USA opens competition with Russia at 3 p.m. DST on Tuesday (Aug. 17). The Americans will face Australia on Wednesday (Aug. 18) and host New Zealand on Thursday (Aug. 19) before entering the tournament round.
