ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team concluded the non-conference schedule with a 1-0 victory over Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 19) inside the U-M Soccer Stadium. The win marked the 200th collegiate victory for U-M head coach Greg Ryan.
The goalkeeping tandem of junior/sophomore Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) and freshman Vicky Correa-Parsons (Mississauga,Ontario/St. Martin's Secondary) combined for Michigan's second straight shutout, posting one save apiece.
Michigan struck for the game's lone goal in the 20th minute. Freshman Shelina Zadorsky (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) picked out freshman Tori McCombs (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) with a one-touch pass down the left-hand side. McCombs' tried to deliver a low pass across the goalmouth to freshman Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) on the far bar. Before it arrived at its destination, the ball deflected off a Penguin defender and into the back of the net.
U-M continued the barrage of shots in the second frame as Ezurike found two Wolverines crashing the far post, but senior Sarah Stanczyk's (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) shot deflected off the post. McCombs later slotted the ball through to Stancyzk, who was denied again from 15 yards out on a diving save from the Youngstown State goalkeeper.
Michigan will kick off the 2010 Big Ten season with Ohio State on Sunday (Sept. 26) at 2 p.m. inside the U-M Soccer Stadium.
