ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 7 USA Today/No. 7 USCHO) overcame a two-goal deficit, scoring three straight markers in the second period to defeat the Ferris State Bulldogs (UR USA Today/No. 19 USCHO), 3-2, on Friday (Jan. 14) at Yost Ice Arena.
The defensive pair of sophomore Lee Moffie (Wallingford, Conn.) and junior Brandon Burlon (Nobleton, Ontario) sparked the Wolverines' comeback with a goal apiece, before sophomore right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) notched his first game-winning goal of the season with just 1:02 left in the middle frame. Senior goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) turned away 29 total shots for the victory.
Ferris State struck first at 4:43 of the opening frame. A large rebound from a Nate Hennig shot landed on the stick of Garrett Thompson, who buried it from between the face-off circles to put Bulldogs in front, 1-0.
The Bulldogs doubled their lead on the power play at 3:37 into the second period, when Chad Billins scored into the top left corner after circulating the puck through the offensive zone on tic-tac-toe passing.
However, just two minutes later, Michigan cut the deficit in half. Senior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) won a faceoff and sent the puck back to Moffie, who rifled the puck from the top of the left faceoff circle over Ferris State goaltender Pat Nagle's glove, putting the Wolverines on the board. Three minutes later, Michigan tied it at 2-2 when a shot from Burlon seemed to freeze Nagle, as it was sniped high to the stick side.
The Wolverines took the lead with 1:02 remaining in the period. A shot from junior defenseman Greg Pateryn (Sterling Heights, Mich.) sailed wide and while falling down, senior left wing Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) centered the rebound to Brown, who flicked it in the gaping net for a 3-2 advantage.
U-M and Ferris State head to Big Rapids for game two of the home-and-home series, which will be played on Saturday (Jan. 15) at 7:05 p.m. The contest will be televised in the state of Michigan on Comcast (channel 900).
