
Wolverines Bulldoze Eastern Michigan in Home Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team celebrated its home opener with a commanding defeat of Eastern Michigan, 141-98, on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 15) inside Canham Natatorium. Michigan took all 11 swimming events, sweeping the podium three times.
Senior Tony Wahl (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Jesuit) and sophomore Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) led the way for the Maize and Blue with two wins each. Gregg also anchored U-M's winning 400-yard medley relay.
Wahl dominated in 200-yard races, winning the individual medley (1:54.40) and butterfly (1:53.48) at that distance. Gregg was one of three Wolverines to reach the podium in the 50-yard freestyle, pacing the field on a time of 20.86. In the 100-yard freestyle, Gregg put a little less than a second between himself and the field, touching the wall in 45.96.
Freshman Sean Ryan (Hixson, Tenn./McCallie School) carried just shy of a 12-second lead to the finish in the 500-yard freestyle after sophomore Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. Francis deSales) edged him out in the 200-yard freestyle.
Freshman Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) made his debut in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a victory, finishing with a time of 9:26.44. Sophomore Connor McCarroll (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) led a trio of Wolverines to the podium on a 1:50.80 performance in the 200-yard backstroke. Freshman Kyle Duckitt (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. John's College) became the seventh and final Wolverine to win an individual event, claiming the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:04.51.
Nine Wolverines will compete tonight (Saturday, Jan. 15) at the second day of the SMU Classic, beginning at 7:30 p.m. CST in Dallas, Texas. The entire squad will reunite for the Big Ten home opener on Sunday (Jan. 16) against Purdue at 5 p.m. inside Canham Natatorium.
