NAPLES, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team opened its spring season today (Saturday, Jan. 29) playing an alumni match at the Grey Oaks Country Club. Former All-Big Ten Wolverines Ashley Bauer (2007-10), Laura Olin (2002-05) and Kim Benedict (2000-03) joined six current Wolverines and coaches in a friendly scramble event.
Ashley Bauer hosted the first grouping with freshman Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County), freshman Chelsea Pezzola (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal Prep) and U-M head coach Cheryl Stacy. Benedict's squad included junior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc), freshman Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) along with U-M assistant coach Chrissie George. Olin played with senior Min Yean Tan (Penang Island, Malaysia/Hills International College [Australia]), sophomore Caramia Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep Academy [Bradenton, Fla.]) and U-M Golf Course employee Guy Ransom, who lives in Florida during the winter.
With the scramble format, each team determined the best drive and then played their individual ball from there. The teams totaled the two lowest scores to determine the team score from each hole. Benedict's squad won the scramble with a team tally of 10 under -- highlighted by Shimel's 69.
The Wolverines opened the weekend in Florida playing a practice round at the Bonita Bay Club before heading to Grey Oaks for the alumni match. The Wolverines will play a closing practice round at Grey Oaks on Sunday before heading back to Ann Arbor.
The spring season will officially open up with the Wolverines taking their annual trip to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Feb. 13-15, for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Coco Beach Golf Course.
