Murillo to Play for Mexico in Friendly against France

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman midfielder Christina Murillo (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) of the University of Michigan women's soccer team has been invited to participate in the Mexican National Team's international friendly with France this Sunday (Nov. 20) in Fort de France, Martinique. She is currently in Mexico City training with the national team and will arrive in Martinique on Saturday (Nov. 19).
Murillo is a member of Mexico's U-20 National Team pool and gained an invite to the team after participating in a week-long training camp last summer in San Diego, Calif. The friendly serves as a warm-up to the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying tournament, which is held Jan. 19-29 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The tournament determines which two teams (of eight) will advance to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Mexico is in Group B, and will have matches against the United States, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala. Group A consists of Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba and Haiti. If Mexico qualifies for the Olympics, Murillo has a chance to be on the roster. She could also make the national team for the 2012 CONCACAF U-20 Women's Championships, of which three teams advance to the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Uzbekistan.
Murillo was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team and started all 19 matches for the Wolverines this season, recording five assists. She assisted on three of Michigan's goals in its 6-0 victory over Duquesne on Aug. 26, tying a program record for most assists in a game. She was third on the team in shots (33).
