DETROIT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 20 USCHO.com, NR USA Today/USA Hockey) took the first step toward defending its 2010 Great Lakes Invitational championship with a 4-2 win over No. 3 Boston College tonight (Thursday, Dec. 29) at Joe Louis Arena. The Wolverines will take on No. 14 Michigan State in tomorrow's title game in search of their 15th GLI crown.
Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, thanks to goals by David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) and Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz). Wohlberg opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season just 1:32 after the opening faceoff. The senior alternate captain took a pass from Alex Guptill (Newmarket, Ontario) and put a perfectly placed shot past BC goaltender Brian Billett for the early advantage.
Michigan extended the lead to 2-0 as Moffatt found the puck during a scramble in front of the Eagles' goal and buried it for his fourth tally of the season. The goal was Moffatt's first power-play marker of his career.
Boston College stormed back with an impressive second period and managed to knot the game at two goals apiece near the midway point, as Tommy Cross and Paul Carey notched goals for the Eagles.
As time wound down in the second period, A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) provided Michigan the game-winner with his seventh goal of the season. Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) picked up his first point of the night with an assist on the Wolverines' third goal.
Glendening registered his second multiple-point game of the season with an empty-net goal at the 19:46 mark to seal the victory for the Maize and Blue.
Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) earned his 10th win of the season, stopping 23 shots in the win. Billett allowed three goals on 28 shots for BC.
Tomorrow night's championship game vs. Michigan State is slated for a 7:36 p.m. start at Joe Louis Arena.
