ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite being out shot and receiving zero power plays, the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 11 USA Today/No. 11 USCHO) doubled up the Western Michigan Broncos (RV USA Today/No. 17 USCHO), 6-3, on Friday (Feb. 18) at Yost Ice Arena. The win not only puts U-M in sole possession of second place in the CCHA but also extends its winning streak at Yost to 10 games.
U-M led 2-0 after the first period and 4-0 four minutes into the second period. WMU battled back with two goals of its own to make it 4-2 after 40 minutes. After the teams traded goals a minute apart in the final frame, an empty-netter in the final minutes clinched the Wolverine win.
Junior defenseman Greg Pateryn (Sterling Heights, Mich.) had four points on the night, contributing on each of the first four goals of the contest. Sophomore center Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) tallied two goals and senior goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) posted his eighth 30-plus save game of the season.
In an attempt to clear the zone as a U-M penalty kill wound down, Pateryn slapped the puck around the boards from behind his own net. The puck hopped over the stick of a WMU defenseman and found senior left wing Scooter Vaughan (Placentia, Calif.) as he was exiting the penalty box to create a two-on-one. Vaughan kept the puck to himself and snuck it by Bronco goaltender Jerry Kuhn for the 1-0 advantage at 6:10 of the first period.
Moments later at 8:45, Pateryn ripped a slap shot that was stopped by Kuhn. The rebound landed on the stick of Lynch, who finished into a near-empty net to put the Maize and Blue up by two.
Michigan scored twice in a matter of 15 seconds early in the second stanza to take a 4-0 lead. Pateryn out-hustled his defender to the front of the WMU net and tipped a pass from senior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) past the sprawling goalie at 3:27. Then, sophomore right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) deflected a Pateryn shot into the Bronco net at 3:42.
After a goalie change, the Broncos began a response at 6:11 of the second period. Dane Walters scored from the right wing to make it 4-1. At 9:44, the Broncos cut their deficit to 4-2 when Chase Balisy smacked a bouncing puck past Hunwick from the left side.
A slow third period start was revved up at 11:15 when Lynch converted on a two-on-one rush, electing to shoot instead of pass to pad U-M's lead to 5-2.
Forty-seven seconds later, Western's Max Campbell nicked a shot that eluded Hunwick, and the score teetered to 5-3.
Junior right wing Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) buried an empty-netter at 18:23 that sealed the deal for U-M, and finalized the score at 6-3.
Michigan hosts Western Michigan again tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 19) at Yost Ice Arena at 7:35 p.m. The game will be televised by FS Detroit. U-M will recognize its senior class following the contest.
