PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's track and field freshman Cody Riffle (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) was named the Big Ten Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday (April 13) following his performance at the UCLA Rafer Johnson Invitational last weekend (Thu-Sat., April 7-9).
Riffle won the shot put with a top mark of 18.40 meters (or 60-4 1/2 feet), the third-best throw in school history. He became the first Michigan shot putter to throw more than 60 feet since Johnny Nielsen in 1982, a span of 29 years. His throw currently ranks as the best in the Big Ten and seventh nationally. He also finished fifth in the discus.
He is the first Michigan field athlete to earn the recognition since Sean Pruitt (2006-10) on April 1, 2008.
Michigan hosts Ohio State in "The Dual" this Sunday (April 17) at 11 a.m. at historic Ferry Field
