PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- After leading the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team to a pair of weekend sweeps at Illinois and Iowa, freshman Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (April 19). It is the second time this season she has won the weekly laurel.
Bolender, who is currently ranked No. 86 by the ITA, ran her singles win streak to 15 with a pair of straight-set victories while pairing with senior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) for two doubles wins at the top of the lineup. In Michigan's 7-0 win at Illinois on Friday (April 15), Bolender dispatched of No. 110 Rachael White (6-2, 7-5) at the No. 2 position to keep the Illini off the board. Muresan and Bolender combined for an 8-4 victory over No. 25-ranked White and Allison Falkin to clinch the doubles point.
Against Iowa on Sunday (April 17), Bolender cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jessica Young at the No. 2 position to run her dual-match record to 20-1. Muresan and Bolender once again knocked off another ranked duo on the doubles court, defeating No. 24-ranked Sonja Molnar and Young by a count of 8-2.
Michigan returns home to the Varsity Tennis Center for its final regular-season match on Saturday (April 23), hosting Northwestern with the Big Ten title on the line. The senior class will be honored prior to the 11 a.m. match.
