
Wolverines to Head to Chapel Hill for NCAA Super Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (21-6) heads to North Carolina to face the No. 5-ranked Tar Heels (26-3) in the NCAA Super Regional on Friday (May 8) at the Chewning Tennis Center. The match is set for 5 p.m. Michigan is making its fourth consecutive NCAA Super Regional appearance.
Notes
• U-M advanced to the round of 16 for the fourth straight season and for the 14th time in program history. Michigan defeated Illinois State (4-0) and No. 17 Florida (4-2) at home last weekend (May 2-3) to advance to the super-regional round at No. 5 North Carolina.
• Of the 16 teams left in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, Michigan faced eight of them during the regular season in No. 2 Auburn, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 7 Virginia, No. 8 NC State, No. 13 USC, No. 14 Vanderbilt, No. 15 Duke and No. 18 UCLA. Michigan recorded wins over Ohio State, Duke, USC and UCLA.
• Reese Miller went 2-0 in singles matches last weekend, pushing her season win total to 31. It marks the first 30-win season of her career, making her the 20th different Wolverine to win at least 30 singles matches in a season. She is 31-9 on the season and leads U-M with 20 dual-match wins.
• Also going 2-0 in singles matches in the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament were Jessica Bernales (2-0 at No. 5) and Lily Jones (2-0 at No. 1). Emily Sartz-Lunde picked up a win at No. 4 over Illinois State to round out Michigan's singles victors.
• U-M has two wins over North Carolina in program history, the most recent coming in a 5-2 win at the Varsity Tennis Center on Feb. 20, 2016.
• This is Michigan's first trip to Chapel Hill since Feb. 1, 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the rest of the season.
• The Wolverines are 8-1 in true road matches this year, winning their last seven in a row.
• With a 4-0 shutout of Illinois State to begin the NCAA Tournament (May 2), Michigan picked up its 20th win of the season. U-M has reached the 20-win mark 16 times in program history.
• Michigan won its fourth Big Ten Tournament title in the last five seasons, knocking off No. 5 Ohio State 4-2 in Columbus on Sunday (April 26). U-M has won tournament titles in 1997, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026. Jones was named the Most Outstanding Player at the event, with Piper Charney grabbing a spot on the all-tournament team.
• Michigan is making its 27th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and is coming off the first Final Four appearance in program history. U-M is 42-26 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
• Michigan won its fourth straight Big Ten championship this season, going 12-1 in conference play and sharing the title with Ohio State and USC. Head coach Ronni Bernstein is now tied for first in Big Ten women's tennis history with 13 Big Ten championships. She now has a combined 20 Big Ten titles during her time in Ann Arbor, winning seven Big Ten Tournament titles -- all since 2015.
• U-M is 17-1 when winning the doubles point and 4-5 without it. Michigan most recently took a 4-1 win over Maryland in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament (April 25) without the match's first point.
• Jones became the first Wolverine to reach the 30-win mark in singles this year after recording a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 111 Oliwia Orlinska of Maryland in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament (April 25). She is 33-9 on the season, reaching 30 wins for the second straight season. She picked up the 100th win of her career during the NCAA Singles Championship and is now tied with Ronit Yurovsky for fourth all-time at Michigan with 117 singles wins.Â
• Michigan has four ranked singles players in Charney (No. 8), Jones (No. 24), Miller (No. 105) and Sartz-Lunde (No. 120).
• Michigan has four players who have reached the 20-win mark on the singles court in Jones (33), Miller (31), Sartz-Lunde (28) and Charney (23).
• Bernstein is in her 19th season as the head coach, holding a 569-202 overall coaching record. She has led Michigan to 13 Big Ten championships and seven Big Ten tournament titles.
• The winner of this match will advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, with the remainder of the event set to take place at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
