BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Five members of the CWPA Western Division champion and No. 6-ranked University of Michigan Water Polo team were recognized at the CWPA Eastern Championship awards banquet on Thursday evening (April 28) at the Henke Hall of Champions at Memorial Stadium.
Matt Anderson was named CWPA Western Division Coach of the Year for the sixth time. Senior Alison Mantel (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) and sophomore Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) earned all-conference first team distinctions and senior Lauren Orth (Poway, Calif./Poway) and sophomore Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) were selected to the second team.
Mantel, a unanimous selection, leads the Wolverines with 47 markers and is the team's co-leader with 79 points. A two-time AWPCA All-America honorable mention, Mantel picked up her second first-team nomination to go with a pair of second team selections. She enters the conference tournament with 208 goals and a program-record 153 assists for 361 points -- the second-highest total in program history.
Golden led the Wolverines with eight goals during conference play, including a career-high five markers in the division title clinching contest with Hartwick on April 9. She has a team-leading 48 steals and is third in scoring with 66 points (36 goals, 30 assists). An AWPCA All-America honorable mention as a freshman, Golden was named the CWPA Eastern All-Tournament Rookie of the Year in 2010.
Orth has tallied a point in every game of the 2011 campaign, sharing the team lead with 79 points. Her 37 assists pace the Wolverines and she ranks second on the squad with 42 goals and 39 steals. A 2010 CWPA All-Western Division first team selection, Orth led the Maize and Blue with six assists and six steals during conference play.
Adamson became just the fourth goaltender in program history to win 20 games, thanks in part to a perfect 4-0 record in division play. A 2010 CWPA All-Western Division first team selection, Adamson has gone 20-2 with a 7.80 goals-against average and 17 helpers this season. She was named the division's top defensive player of the week after guiding U-M to a win over No. 12 Indiana on March 26 and for her shutout effort against Long Beach State on Feb. 12.
Anderson was named Western Division Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career and for the third consecutive season. Anderson has guided this season's Wolverines to the fifth 30-plus win campaign in program history and is seeking his fifth conference title since taking over the program in 2003.
Top-seed Michigan will begin its quest for a fourth straight CWPA Eastern Championship crown tomorrow (Friday, April 29) at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of No. 8-seed George Washington and No. 9-seed Mercyhurst.
