PRINCETON, N.J. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team outlasted No. 18-ranked Princeton, 12-10, on Sunday (April 3) to conclude the Tiger Tournament at DeNunzio Pool.
Sophomore Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) scored three times and had two steals. Senior Lauren Orth (Poway, Calif./Poway) posted a playmaker (three assists) to go with the game-tying five-meter penalty shot goal.
Sophomore Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) made six stops in the cage.
After jumping out a 6-2 lead after one period, the Wolverines found themselves on the wrong end of a 8-3 Princeton run that carried the host Tigers into a 10-9 lead late in the fourth period.
Michigan got the equalizer with 2:15 to go when a fast break drew a five-meter penalty that Orth skipped into the back of the net. Senior Alison Mantel (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) put the Maize and Blue back into the lead with a laser to the far corner of the cage 30 seconds later. After running time off the clock, the Wolverines got an insurance marker with 26 seconds left on a lob from six meters out.
The Wolverines created that 6-2 lead as six different players found paydirt in the opening frame. Michigan had already struck for three goals before two minutes came off the clock. After Princeton got on the board, seniors Keller Felt (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) and Ryley Plunkett (Modesto, Calif./Johansen) extended the U-M lead with a pair of skips from the point. Each team scored again before the end of the frame.
The Wolverines will look to clinch their 10th consecutive CWPA division crown when it faces Hartwick on Saturday (April 9) at 11:30 a.m. to open the Bison Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On the atmosphere playing a role ... "With it being Princeton's Senior Day, I knew it would have their team that much more emotionally charged to go. And with it also being an important pre-Easterns matchup in terms of seeding, I thought it was important to come out hard and be able to control the game that way. It was as good of a first period as we've had this season. I was very happy with how we charged out of the gate in the first period."
On the comebacks ... "Princeton did a very nice job in second and third period of using their power play to comeback. We didn't have the opportunities to do that as they did. It was the fourth period that we reestablished that aggressive play that got us the early lead and, fortunately, we were able to end on top. We scored 10 natural goals, which is nice to see. Princeton is a good team and it was really was a tale of the first and fourth periods and the second and third periods. Completely different ways of doing it for both teams and we managed to come out with the win."
