
Michigan's Three Crews Move On to NCAA Petite Finals

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team progressed each of its three boats into the petite finals following the semifinals of the 2011 NCAA Championships on Saturday (May 28) at Lake Natoma. The first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four all finished sixth in their respective semifinals.
Michigan's first varsity eight took sixth with a time of 6:57.63. Stanford finished first in 6:21.68, followed by Brown and Michigan State to move to the grand final. At 500 meters, the Maize and Blue was a length off the lead and a seat back of fifth-place Washington State. U-M continued to chase the Cougars and the rest of the field but could not recover.
U-M's second varsity eight clocked in at 6:55.46 to earn sixth place. Brown won the semifinal in 6:36.90. The Wolverines were fifth at the 500-meter and 1,000-meter buoys but were eclipsed by Michigan State by the 1,500-meter mark to place sixth. Virginia and Southern California took second and third, respectively, to reach the grand final.
The first varsity four finished sixth in a time of 7:36.92, 15.4 seconds off the winning pace of California. U-M was fifth through the opening 1,500 meters of the race prior to Brown passing it down the stretch. Southern California and Washington joined Cal in earning spots in the grand final.
Michigan returns to the water for the final time this season on Sunday (May 29) for the NCAA Championships finals. U-M's races are slated for 10:05 a.m. (first varsity four petite final), 10:55 a.m. (second varsity eight petite final) and 11:45 a.m. (first varsity eight petite final).
