GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team posted a 13th-place team finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships on Sunday (May 29) at Lake Natoma. U-M's first varsity eight was sixth in its petite final for a 12th-place overall showing. The second varsity eight and first varsity four each earned fifth place in their respective petite finals to finish 11th overall.
Michigan's first varsity eight earned sixth in the petite final with a time of 6:42.74, 9.5 seconds behind the winning Virginia crew. U-M trailed Yale, Virginia and Wisconsin through 500 meters. Michigan fell back to sixth place at 1,000 meters, yet it was just a few seats back of Washington and Washington State to retake fourth. U-M nearly tracked down WSU at the finish line but missed out on fifth place by 0.08 seconds.
The second varsity eight petite final was highly contested with eight seconds separating first place (Washington, 6:35.91) from seventh place (Wisconsin, 6:43.92). Michigan maintained contact with the lead boat throughout the race while battling for position in the middle of the pack. The Wolverines held off Yale and Wisconsin down the stretch to clinch fifth in a time of 6:42.28.
The first varsity four clocked in at 7:26.72 to earn fifth place. The Wolverines were fifth at each of the 500-, 1,000- and 1,500-meter checkpoints. Brown won the petite final in 7:17.67.
The 2011 NCAA Championships wrap up the 15th varsity season of Michigan rowing, with head coach Mark Rothstein leading the program since its inception.
