ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan women's basketball center Krista Phillips (2006-10) was recently added to Canada's national team roster. Team Canada will attempt to qualify for its first Olympic Games in more than a decade when it competes in the 12-team FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament (June 25-July 1) in Ankara, Turkey.
Canada must finish in the top five to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. After teams square off in their groups, the top eight qualify for the knockout round with all four quarterfinal winners advancing to the Olympics. The four teams playing in the losers' bracket during the quarterfinals will play two rounds to allocate the final slot.
Team Canada cut the roster to 16 players in May and will trim the roster to 12 this month before competing in Turkey. The team is scheduled to compete in Europe before playing in the qualifying tournament.
Phillips, a native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, joined the Canadian National Team after her debut in Australia's WNBL with the Dandenong Rangers. In 24 games played during the 2011-12 season, she shot 49 percent from the floor and averaged 11.2 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds per game.
Phillips is among 22 players in Michigan women's basketball history to record 1,000 points and ranks 19th on the all-time scoring list (1,090). She sits atop the all-time list in games played (127) and is ninth in rebounds (707). She started 89 games in her four-year college career, making all 35 starts during her senior season. For her career, she averaged 8.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 45 percent from the field.
During the 2007-08 season, she averaged a career-best 10.3 points per game. In her final season with the Wolverines, she hauled in a career-high 6.7 rebounds and averaged 9.8 points per game.
Before attending U-M, Phillips was a two-year member of Canada's Junior National Team (2005-06). Phillips helped lead the team to a silver-medal finish during the 2006 FIBA Americas Under-18 World Championship Qualification Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo.
