
Michigan Finishes Fifth at Head of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The University of Michigan rowing team posted a fifth-place finish in the Women's Championship Eights race this afternoon (Sunday, Oct. 19) at the Head of the Charles, one of the most prestigious regattas held in North America, held on the Charles River. The finish is the best Michigan showing at the Head of the Charles since 2011.
The Wolverines edged Brown for fifth place and were second among all collegiate crews in the race, clocking in with a time of 16:36.92. Michigan finished 18.32 seconds behind the top collegiate crew from the University of Virginia. There were 34 boats in the Women's Championship Eights race, one that featured 30 of the top collegiate crews in the nation and four international crews. The women's "Great Eight" crew from the Cambridge Boat Club took the top spot in the race at 15:44.79.
Michigan's eight included Alex Spaulding (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet), Sam Heron (Victoria, British Columbia/Claremont Secondary School), Kaitlin Wright (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeview), Kendall Brewer (Austin, Tex./Stephen F. Austin), Jessica Eiffert (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima), Louisa Freeman (Westport, Conn./Staples), Felicity Cain (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Adena Coste (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional). Hannah Sherman (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) served as the U-M coxswain.
U-M returns to action next Sunday (Oct. 26) in a novice-only race at Michigan State. The full team will take part in the Michigan Classic on Friday, Nov. 7, in Belleville, Mich.
