ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) of the 14th-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 21).
Ferlic earned the honor after a 12th-place showing among a field of 254 runners at last weekend's 8K Wisconsin Adidas Invitational, crossing the finish line with a time of 23:59. He led the way for the Wolverines, who earned their fourth consecutive top-10 showing in the event with a score of 296 points, besting 10 other top-ranked programs in a field of competition that featured 19 total top-30 teams. Ferlic was also the top-finishing Big Ten runner in a field that featured runners from six Big Ten teams.
The conference honored Ferlic after last year's running of the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational as well. Overall, this week's honor marks the fifth time in Ferlic's career that he has been named as the conference's athlete of the week.
As a sophomore, he collected his first conference award (Sept. 25) for helping lead the Maize and Blue to a sixth-place finish at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational. Ferlic has now collected the award three times this season, including today. His prior recognitions came after racing to a first-place team and individual finish at the Big Ten Preview (Sept. 23) and Notre Dame Blue and Gold Invitational (Oct. 3).
Michigan returns to action on Friday (Oct. 24) for the EMU Fall Classic in nearby Dexter. The race begins at 4 p.m.
